JJSE math team featured in Rethinking Schools: The 2010 JJSE math team (Adam Renner, who died tragically in December 2010, along with Bridget Brew and Crystal Proctor) had an article published in the most recent issue of Rethinking Schools (Winter 2011-12), a national magazine for educators. The article describes a project in which seniors mentor freshmen in understanding scatter plots about demographic data from San Francisco neighborhoods. A copy is attached.
Learning Forward highlights JJSE’s video teacher development project: JJSE’s video professional development project, in which teachers film their lessons and engage in critical reflection with colleagues, was the highlight of a recent issue of The Leading Teacher, a newsletter published by Learning Forward, an international educators’ organization (formerly known as the National Staff Development Council). JJSE students to sell garden crops at Ferry Plaza Market: JJSE has been selected as the third school in the Schoolyard to Market program run by the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture. Thanks to the SF Green Schoolyard Alliance, we are joining John O’Connell HS and Life Learning Academy in this innovative program which allows high school students to grow vegetables and fruits to sell at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. The program will be run at JJSE by our long-time partners Urban Sprouts, who recently helped us take our school garden to the next level by getting donations from the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation to create a new orchard with apple, pear, and citrus trees as well as berries.
