We establish the classroom mood to support our teaching goals, taking into account the energy students bring with them.
There is a principle in community organizing which applies equally well to teaching: Control the environment, control the outcome. JJSE teachers are mindful of the energy their students bring into the classroom—especially when they are stressed or tense or tired—and then moderate their own energy levels and demeanors to help establish an environment conducive to learning. Some teachers use humor to bring laughter and joy to the classroom; others share an infectious enthusiasm; and still others infuse the class with their calm sense of seriousness and authenticity.
Binder-Making Extravaganza, Katrina Traylor
At the beginning of the school year, Humanities teacher Katrina Traylor introduces her class to their binder, which includes 14 sections designed to ensure that students never lose anything. In some teacher’s hands, this lesson could be a rote, boring process, especially on a hot afternoon– but Ms. Traylor is so excited about the details of each binder section that it’s almost impossible for students not to stay engaged. (Note: this piece is also a good example of Clear Purpose.)
