Jedi Awareness

We notice everything, and we address small issues before they become bigger ones.

Classroom safety starts with the teacher being aware of everything that happens in the room, so that disturbances, interruptions, and lapses in focus are addressed as often as possible. This acute awareness simultaneously demonstrates the real-world application of discipline and concentration skills while also showing concern for the well-being and voices of the students. Small issues are often first addressed through humor or with a gentle reminder, but if they continue the teacher’s response escalates quickly to establish clear boundaries, while also showing faith that students are capable of meeting expectations.

In this JJSE special education class, students are engaged in independent practice. Note how the adults use their jedi awareness powers to pay close attention to everything that is happening in the room, even when they are working one-on-one with a student. When necessary, they leave the student they are working with to provide a check or word of encouragement to another student who needs assistance.
